The main disc of this movie includes both the theatrical version of the film and the extended version. Since it was the theatrical version that was nominated for an Oscar, I chose to watch that one. Besides, all the extended material is included in the deleted scenes section, so you can watch it all together and then decide if you really want to see it incorporated back into the film.
The deleted scenes give a little more embellishment about Ray’s life, but all fall within the confines of the film’s timeline. It’s not like there’s anything that goes further into Ray’s life. One of the extended musical sequences gives you a more complete song, but “Hit the Road Jack” still felt short.
There is a great featurette on how Jamie Foxx immersed himself into Ray Charles. It includes analysis from Foxx and footage of sessions between Foxx and Charles while he was still alive. That is priceless and a worthy extra for the DVD. |
