While it’s great to have some bonus features on a Father of the Bride DVD, it’s a shame that all they could get was old EPK stuff. The “making of” and Interview both come from the film’s set with the actors in costume, or in the era. True, it’s new to us, but still, for a movie this successful and timeless, they should have gotten some people back to participate.
The EPK spot is a bit suspect to me because it claims Steve Martin had never been this emotional before. Sorry, but Parenthood was two years before. Father is great, but the precedent had already been set. Otherwise, just your basic fluff piece.
The Interview between Steve Martin and Martin Short is like an improv session. It’s not laugh out loud funny, but they say some funny things. Talking about Short playing the bride isn’t laugh out loud because it’s trying too hard, but you’ve got to respect the lengths to which they take it.
Fortunately, director Charles Shyer provides a new commentary. He’s good at keeping things moving, be they technical concerns or on set memories. |
