Sling Blade Director's Cut DVD Review

The term “Director’s Cut” has lost some of its luster since every other DVD comes out in an extended, unrated or director’s special version. But when an older movie, made before the DVD boom, gets the treatment, I’m a bit more intrigued.
Unfortunately, Sling Blade might as well just be another DVD extension. Billy Bob Thornton has put back some scene extensions and character beats, but nothing especially dramatic. So you see Carl wander around town a bit longer, you see Doyle charm some cops and you see Frank and Mom recover from one of Doyle’s attacks, but nothing gives you any more insight than the film already has. In fact, the Doyle scene is completely irrelevant to the narrative.
Sling Blade is a wonderful movie, and I still quote “French fried potaters, mm-hmm.” The director’s cut doesn’t hurt the film. The pacing was already deliberate, so additional moments don’t throw that off. But I wouldn’t get too excited for a whole new experience. |

Description: Billy Bob Thornton puts some odds and ends back into the film. It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't make much difference.
