Imaginary Heroes is a wonderful dramedy that uses humor to deal with morbid and generally troubling subjects. It’s all about death, but the characters do some really messed up things that are both morally interesting and amusing. It’s the type of film that deserves some analysis, so the DVD extras are good for that.
The big extra feature on this DVD is the Sigourney Weaver audio commentary. As the mother in this broken family, she exercises her acting chops with desperation and strength. Her calm insight into the story is a soothing listen, and it gives insight into a real professional’s craft.
Some deleted scenes will be of interest too. Scenes about kids taking advantage of a narcoleptic teacher and using a fake ID show the same mix of humor and drama in real life situations. There’s an additional philosophical riff, though other scenes are just filler, but the good ones are worth seeing. They’re all Emile Hirsch scenes. Weaver only has a few lines in one of them.
Writer/director’s commentary and behind the scenes featurettes also included. |
