Suckumentary, the entirety of the documentary Tibby was making in the film, is actually an entertaining standalone piece. If you haven’t even seen the movie, you can appreciate the humor of small town people with nothing to do, and if you’ve seen the film, you get to experience the full fruits of a fictional character’s labors.
The video commentary spot works well. The girls have a nice playful banter and actually say significant things about the scenes they chose. Find out about how the scenes were put together, what they did on the set and more, as well as non sequitur self-conscious comments. It’s appropriate to the tone of the film, yet not pandering to the young audience.
Featurettes on Ann Brashears and Fun on the Set do their job. The author discusses her background and developing the novel, with the film’s actors commenting on her work as well. Fun on the Set shows how the young girls got along, basically both puff pieces about how great everyone is but harmless. There’s good B-roll footage on the “Fun” section to give you actual evidence of people having fun.
The deleted scenes may be extra material from the book. I wouldn’t know and the director does not identify them as such. So just as deleted movie scenes, they’re all just extra moments on the girls’ various vacations. Teenage boys will appreciate the extra cheerleader scenes and girls may like to see the hot guy dancing. Bridget’s story seems to get the most added depth with these scenes, though there’s more with Lena in Greece too. Tibby’s scene is really filler and there’s not much with Carmen, so most of her stuff must have been included. |
