"The Weather Man" DVD Review

The most interesting drama of last year unfortunately has a very ordinary DVD. Perhaps if The Weather Man had done better at the box office, they would have put together a more avant-garde special edition, but with only five EPK style featurettes, you hardly get into the film’s really interesting themes.
A spot on the script has the filmmakers discuss the character and themes of the film. It’s only on the surface level of how the writer thought of the ideas and why the filmmakers thought it was so different.
A feature on the real weather man advisor emphasizes the tenuous world of a windy city forecaster. This is the sort of fluff piece that would be charming if included in a more complete DVD package.
A featurette on the style is a bit more interesting as the production designer talks about what they found in the film’s locations. It’s a little more artistic but it’s also just a preproduction on tour.
Remaining spots on the characters and the collaboration are just hype pieces. The actors and filmmakers talk about what their characters mean, and how great it was to work together. These are the sort of generic soundbites I don’t include in my interview features, but I guess they wind up on these DVD features because someone has to use them. |

Description: Even though there are five featurettes on the "Weather Man" DVD, you don't really get to go too far inside this deep, different drama. The movie is worth checking out, but you won't get much out of the bonus features.
