"Midnight Cowboy" Collector's Edition DVD Review

I’ll give credit to the new Midnight Cowboy collector’s edition DVD because they got all the surviving principals back to talk about it. Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman give new interviews, and people close to John Schlessinger complete the portrait of the director.
That said, these sorts of talking head retrospectives are getting a bit old. Maybe I’m taking it for granted that every DVD has one now, but I’ve stopped feeling like they’re revealing anything new. There’s a lot of self-congratulation about what a great film they made.
Granted, it’s all deserved. They did make a classic, and it resonates in all the ways they talk about. Maybe obsessive fans of Midnight Cowboy will revel in all the anecdotes. As simply a casual fan of the film, I’m at a point where I’ll just re-watch the film, rather than listen to everyone talk about it. |
