Beavis and Butthead is finally getting as close to the proper DVD treatment as legalities of the music business allow. The 11 videos included in the extra features second of the Volume 2 DVD include some of their best bits. They scream over a loud video with the volume blasting, Madonna masturbation talk and the classic Beavis sing-along,.
The second part of the Taint of Greatness documentary goes more into the depth I was looking for the first time out. They’ve got Trey Parker, and Snoop Dogg talking about the show’s impact on them, and B&B writers talk about successors to Beavis and Butthead like South Park and Family Guy and just how important the comedy was to the 1990s.
Mike Judge’s interview focuses on the music video segments and how he developed the characters through these segments. Yes, this is the real meat of Beavis and Butthead and a part that rarely gets the attention anymore.
Special Appearances include three “Butt Bowl” appearance, including B&B’s voices over a blank screen because they couldn’t get the rights to the actual broadcast they were commenting on. That’s just fine. Bravo for presenting it anyway. That’s what they need to do with the rest of the music videos. Any extra B&B appearance is awesome so hopefully they will get to the Letterman appearance by Volume 3.
The real treasure is the unaired I Love the ‘90s segment but the reason they didn’t use it is even their best commentators had nothing clever to say about it. The VH1 regulars do nothing but bad impressions of Beavis and Butthead. Trey Parker’s soundbite is of course meaningful but they don’t cut back to him. |
