I remember Ren and Stimpy on Nickelodeon. It got kind of boring since it was always about boogers and farts. It was committed to the grotesque, but it just wasn’t my thing. I had no idea they ever treaded the territory on this DVD.
Apparently, after their Nickelodeon run, the creators of Ren and Stimpy did some episodes for Spike TV. It’s the same gross-out humor, but on a much more sexual, vulgar and controversial scale.
The piece de resistance has to be the naked beach party episode. There are extended shots of naked boobies and butt cheeks. Yes, they’re animated, but good God, this was on basic cable! It’s all about the sexual jokes: squirting lotion, swinging balls and single entendres like women talking about their pussy. Yes, Ren and Stimpy are cats, but that’s not what they’re talking about.
None of the other six episodes come close to this but they’re all full of outrageous jokes. Part of it is just the thrill of seeing kids’ show characters enter South Park territory. But it’s also just boldy awful, with jokes about coat hanger abortions, and F-bombs dropped without any bleeping.
The only downside is the introductions and bonus materials for each episode are dreadfully boring. The animators are trying to be funny and edgy but they’re not. And it’s always the same story. “Fans told us they wanted this, so we got this hot girl to draw this…” Even Weird Al isn’t funny in these.
Get Ren and Stimpy: The Lost Episodes for good dirty fun. Just don’t watch the extras. |
