The Simpsons: Season Eight DVD Review

The Simpsons producers used to be great at making every episode commentary exciting for Simpson minutiae fans. They finally ran out of steam on the Season Seven DVD so now it’s too slow to hear all of them. Just pick your favorite episodes to hear the gossip, which for me would be “You Only Move Twice, El Viaje Mysterio De Nuestro Homer” and “The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase.”
The deleted scenes just get funnier. Season Eight was part of the golden age and they overwrote the shows. There’s a Patti and Selma musical number, Lisa’s fantasy about a future with Nelson, crazy Flanders railing on Milhouse, a prescient immigration joke way ahead of its time, a great Hans Moleman moment, the reveal that Jasper was the old minister and even some whole stories. When the Simpsons moved, Grandpa got a recorded phone friend. Bart suffered divorce envy when Milhouse’s parents split up. In one deleted scene, catch Nelson speak for Milhouse accidentally.
A feature on the real Simpson house that was built is amazing. There was such craftsmanship, and it doesn’t even address the fact that the winner of the house totally remodeled it. What a crime. At least the footage of it exists.
The DVD menus still have wonderful animated line-up gags. |
