This is the season with the Passion of the Jew episode in which the boys seek reimbursement from Mel Gibson for having paid to see The Passion of the Christ. The timing of the DVD release could not be better.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone recorded their episode commentary before Gibson’s latest cultural incident, so they’re talking more about how in retrospect, the episode isn’t that good, but it is saying something about the box office phenomenon. Were people really moved because Jesus was tortured more than they thought? That’s a real religious epiphany.
More interesting is how they criticize themselves for an episode so highly regarded. Admittedly, it’s always cool when they get something so timely out so quickly. But their idea about Gibson’s obsession with torture is dead on. Now we can only hope they do another Mel Gibson episode when they resume production this fall. |
