Ah-ha, I bring you a review of a September release early. Here’s the bad news. No deleted scenes. They couldn’t clear the music rights, so you’re going to have to buy this movie again later when they come out with a two hour, twelve minutes cut. The good news is, this is a great first DVD for Kevin Smith fans.
Two commentary tracks give you similar but unique perspectives. The Smith/Mosier/Mewes commentary gives you Jason Mewes being… himself. He’s not talking like Jay. He’s trying to represent the viewer which is a good angle, preserves the group dynamic but for the first time lets us hear Mewes the actor and friend. He does a great impression of a test screening focus group too.
The Smith/Affleck commentary is very personal, with the J-Lo and tabloid stuff, and very funny because of the friendship dynamic. There’s a video interview with Smith and Affleck that shares the same dynamic. Obviously, they’re all part of one group, but split up this time you get double the Smith.
There are several of Kevin Smith’s Jay Leno spots here, which have nothing to do with the movie but are funny. Unfortunately, the behind the scenes piece feels and looks like an EPK. Still, I could listen to Smith talk for days, so with many hours of interview and commentary, this is an easy to own collection.
