Half Baked was not Chappelle’s Show, but it was still better than any silly pot movie had any right to be. The cameos, the irreverence, it was 80 minutes of good, dirty fun. Now that Chappelle is a huge success, of course we get a new special edition of his movie.
There are some pretty irreverent features on this disc. The Five Minutes With the Guy on the Couch thing is literally five minutes of a guy sleeping on the couch. I don’t know if it was really Stephen Wright, but it looked like him from behind. There are some bizarre cooking segments that I can’t imagine whether they were staged just for this DVD or actually came from the movie. And the animated bits on different types of smokers are cute.
But the real movie stuff is the deleted scenes and alternate ending. The alternate ending is quite long. It features very rough footage and even some missing effects shots. It’s not as good an ending simply because it doesn’t have that last line that’s so blunt, but it is an alternate ending, as in something different happens. It’s not just one of those alternate endings where the same thing happens in a different room.
And the deleted scenes are funny. They’re also in rough footage, but they include good side stories from the narrator and a little more elaboration on the plot. They really wouldn’t have hurt the film, as it was only 80 minutes anyway. A 90 minute movie with these scenes would have been just as acceptable. |
