Warner Brothers has released several of their classic sitcoms as part of a TV on DVD promotion in February. The promotion includes the complete first seasons of Murphy Brown, Night Court and Full House.
Extras on the Murphy Brown set include a documentary interviewing all of the key players (except of course Robert Pastorelli who died in early 2004.) The interview subjects have vivid memories and cover more than just the first season, so you get a perspective on the whole run of the show. Some blooper footage is thrown in too. An episode commentary by creator Diane English is mellow as she recites inspirations and anecdotes from the scenes. And a commentary by Candice Bergin is sincere, with a few silent gaps.
Extras on the Night Court set include a retrospective documentary that only features Reinhold Weege and Harry Anderson. The likes of Richard Moll and John Larroquette are missing, though Weege and Anderson fill in the gaps well. The pilot commentary by Weege fills in more about the show’s creation and eventual changes, and includes some nice memories about Selma Diamond.
The big extra on the Full House DVD is an original pilot shot without Bob Saget. When items like this are available, it’s always interesting to see another direction in which the show could have gone. This pilot is complete with the classic opening sequence shot with John Poser the different actor. Poser does lack a certain amount of heart in the role, but all the other chemistry is still there. Still, an amazing extra to see in hindsight. |
